Project Graduation

Project Graduation is a major initiative that our club volunteers at each year.

Since 1986, the mission of Project Graduation is to provide a safe, substance-free party environment for the graduating seniors of Charles County, and to show them how proud we are of their accomplishments.

The Charles County Citizens For Substance Free Youth, formerly know as “The Chemical People of  Charles County,”  have been the host of Project Graduation since the beginning. The event is held at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) from 9pm until about 2am.

Kiwanis Club of Charles County volunteers its time and efforts in organizing the food for the recent graduates. This involves acquiring food donations from many restaurants and companies in our county. On the nights of Project Graduation, our members pick up the food, deliver it to CSM, and manage the food tables.

Our club proudly sponsors the following schools with Service Leadership Programs: Gale-Bailey Elementary School, Dr. Higdon Elementary School, Indian Head Elementary School, Mary H. Matula Elementary School, Matthew Henson Middle School, Piccowaxen Middle School, General Smallwood Middle School, Westlake High School, and St. Charles High School. Up and coming are Dr. James Craik Elementary School and J.C. Parks Elementary School.

About Our Club

Kiwanis International is a global organization of members dedicated to serving the children of the world. The Kiwanis Club of Charles County is one of three clubs in Charles County, Maryland. It was formed in Waldorf, Maryland, and chartered on March 2, 1992, with Duncan Creelman serving as the club’s first president. Developed under the principles of Kiwanis International, the goal of the Charles County club is to strive for the principle objects of Kiwanis and strive for a better quality of life for youth in the county, for the community as a whole, and for the individual. Club members have the opportunity to participate in service projects as a group effort and bond together as a community service organization representing the Children of Charles County.

INVITATION: We invite all members of the community to attend one of our meetings to learn more about Kiwanis and the Charles County club. Active club membership is important for the viability of any community service organization. Meetings are held at 6:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month at The Greene Turtle restaurant in La Plata, Maryland. Meetings include dinner, fellowship, business and/or guest speakers on a range of topics from the school system to county infrastructure.

The Objects of Kiwanis International

The six permanent Objects of Kiwanis International were approved by Kiwanis club delegates at the 1924 Convention in Denver, Colorado. Through the succeeding decades, they have remained unchanged.

  • Object 1 – To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.
  • Object 2 – To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
  • Object 3 – To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards.
  • Object 4 – To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.
  • Object 5 – To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities.
  • Object 6 – To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.
