Service Leadership Programs (SLPs)

Kiwanis International empowers people at every stage of life to become competent, capable, and compassionate leaders by helping them learn to help others. Through its Service Leadership Programs, Kiwanis enables its youngest leaders to serve their communities, opening doors for them to change the world.  Kiwanis members have the privilege of serving and guiding these young leaders.

Elementary students – K-Kids
Middle school students – Builders Club
High school students – Key Club
College students – Circle K

Kiwanis has a strong partnership with Charles County Public Schools. Our club sponsors the following schools with Service Leadership Programs: Gale-Bailey Elementary School, Dr. Higdon Elementary School, Mary H. Matula Elementary School, Matthew Henson Middle School, Dr. James Craik Elementary School, Indian Head Elementary School, Piccowaxen Middle School, General Smallwood Middle School, Westlake High School, and St. Charles High School.

Here are a few examples of the different activities the SLPs have been involved in recently.

On June 13, 2015, the Humane Society of Charles County posted the following on their Facebook page. “We would like to give a big shout out to the Dr. Higdon K-Kids for bringing in so many goodies for our animals. They collected money and so many items to feed and care for all of them. The animals and staff at the shelter appreciate what you collected and brought in for us.We couldn’t do it without the help you and other groups give us. Thank you very much.”

Matula Elementary School K-Kids Club received their charter in November of 2015. Kiwanis Club oc Charles County 2014-16 President Vic DiBella speaks to the group of children about the importance of the club and future opportunities to make a difference!
matula_keyclubK-Kids received some small gifts and snacks from the Key Club of La Plata High School.

December 2015 The following clubs collected hats, gloves, and candy for children in need at another local middle school – La Plata H.S. Key Club, Westlake H.S. Key Club,  La Plata H.S. SGA, and La Plata H.S. Best Buddies. Just over 60 bags were collected just in time for the winter season! Kiwanis Club of Charles County donated the gift bags in which the items were placed and helped facilitate this service project!

Westlake High School’s Key Club prepared dinner in January for the Angel’s Watch shelter in Hughesville.

St. Charles High School volunteers monthly at the Sagepoint Senior Living Center. The club also has also volunteered at a local elementary school and plans to make regular visits in the spring to help with after-school tutoring.

Genesis Healthcare Bingo

Once a month Kiwanis Club of Charles County assists the Smallwood Middle School Builder’s Club in running a Bingo night at the Genesis Healthcare facility in La Plata. The residents of Genesis receive one dollar upon winning. A great time is had by all and friendships are made. For more information about Genesis, click here.
